Gig Talk:
Where
we were and what we did!
The
Sleepwalkers - O'Brien's, Allston, MA - 08/24/01
All
right, we know this is coming late but hey, this issue of Soundcheck
sold out before we could get one. We had to order one direct.
So as I was saying, better late than never.
These guys are a highly-amplified
hard rock/heavy metal band led by ex-Happy Campers Mason Vincent
on guitar and vociferous vocals. Bob Shanley on bass, and drummer
John DeAscentis keeping the pounding pulse with his double bass
drums and make no mistake about it - they play loud;
their deafening 1 1/2 hour set was a lesson in fortissimo.
Funny as it sounds,
when the Sleepwalkers performed, their sound level could have
raised the dead; "Sawtooth Life" with
Vincent playing a 7-string Schecter guitar with its low B-string
adding a memorable bottom growl to the range, "Funky
Houston" with its Jeff Beck meets George Clinton
meets Eric Dolphy sound and the mellower pop/rock of "Friends
Left" - dedicated to late scenester Mickey 0 -
were standout songs and judging from the enthusiasm of the small
crowd, this rookie group greatly impressed their new fans; in
fact, one acrobatic patron doing real flips on the dance
floor kept screaming "awesome" during the trio's extended
show and his unbridled overzealousness added an ironic twist
to this band showcasing their aptly labeled "hard rock
with a little bit of sophistication" music.
The
night was almost art-rock. Almost interactive. But definitely
resounding,
- A.J. Wachtel
